Australia’s largest independent grocery supplier, Metcash and 1270 IGA supermarkets have pledged to support Australian producers and suppliers in the food chain in these uncertain economic times, while doubling their charitable contributions to local communities.

In addition, the chain has pledged to source the majority of its newly launched private label Signature grocery range with fresh, high quality products at competitive prices.

Contributions to IGA’s national charity program, Community Chest, will be doubled from one cent to two cents for each product sold in the Signature range. It is expected that the estimated $30 million provided to charities and community groups over the past five years through the Community Chest program, will be doubled to $60 million over the next five years.

At the end of each year, the accumulated funds raised from the sale of IGA Signature products are donated by the IGA stores back to their local communities such as schools, hospitals and charities.

“Our pledge takes our commitment to local communities and Australian suppliers to a new level. Increasing both the amount of local produce in our grocery isles as well as doubling our donations to the Community Chest will make a huge impact,” said chairman of the national board of IGA, Mick Daly.
