The heart of Sydney’s retail precinct will be a thriving hub of Christmas activity this year with seasonal activities taking place over the next two months beginning today with the unveiling of the Christmas tree in the middle of George Street, between Market and King Streets outside the iconic Dymocks store.
Retail Council CEO Anna McPhee said the George Street activation following the closure of George Street to buses and cars is a welcome addition to the city’s retail precinct that will assist in supporting businesses affected by the construction works in the retail area throughout the Christmas shopping period.
“Sydney’s George Street between King and Market Streets might be closed to commuter vehicles but pedestrian zones have been increased making it easier for people to get to their favourite shops” she said.
“With the Christmas tree in place in the middle of George Street it is a great place for festive season selfies.
“The launch of the Christmas tree in George Street today is the first in a series of activities taking place throughout the precinct by the NSW Government, City of Sydney and businesses to support the CBD retail precinct during the construction phase of the CBD light rail.
“It’s important to continue to support the CBD retail precinct to provide employment opportunities and grow the economy during the construction phase.
“Despite the construction works occurring in the CBD, the prime retail precinct is open for business and remains a great place to shop.
“Next month, two new exciting flag ship stores open with H&M and Microsoft”, so there is lots of new stores to explore as well as your favourites”, she said.
“The Christmas activation is a positive step in encouraging shoppers to the area during an important and busy time for the sector and the Retail Council thanks the Government for the support,” said Anna McPhee.
Retail in Sydney’s CBD make an important contribution to the State’s economy serving more than 1.9 million customers, employing 52,000 people and generating $14 billion per year.
Retailers acknowledge the light rail is important infrastructure that will support Tomorrow’s Sydney. It is important the CBD economy continues to function during the construction phase.
