For retailers, or anyone running a business, it’s important to have the right knowledge and tools to protect both your business and customers. That includes knowing how to spot threats and safeguard information.

Cyber security is everyone’s business, and simple measures that can make a big difference in guarding against fraud threats include:

  • Pause to evaluate and verify the communication, and the information being requested.
  • Activate multi-factor authentication across digital devices and online accounts to add an extra layer of security between your data and cyber criminals.
  • Turn on automatic software updates. These updates address weaknesses in outdated software, which can leave you vulnerable to cyber-attacks.
  • Use up-to-date anti-virus and anti-malware software on all your devices.
  • Research any apps you need intend to download to check they are not malware and only download apps from an official app store like Apply App Store or Google Play store.
  • Avoid password reuse. Updating them regularly is one of the most effective ways to help protect your online accounts.  By changing passwords often and making them complex, long and unique, you reduce the risk of unauthorised access.
  • Avoid sensitive tasks on public Wi-Fi as hackers may be able to intercept your data on a public network.
  • Don’t click on unexpected or unusual links in emails, text messages, or pop-up messages on social media – they might lead you to a phishing website. Search for the official website yourself in your browser.

Retailers can also help protect their customers by:

  • Housing e-commerce platforms on secure sites.
  • Increase privacy around point of payment (ie EFTPOS machines) and encourage shoppers to cover the keypad when entering their PIN.
  • Ensure customers are able to contact your business to verify an email or phone call.  Contact details or an online customer service system should be easily identifiable on the retailer’s website or social media.
  • Implement VISA Secure if you’re an online business.
  • Use CAPTCHA technology to prevent bot activity on your website.
