il Mercato Centrale has confirmed it will open its doors in Melbourne on 19 September, marking its first foray outside of its home country of Italy, in the revitalised historic McPherson’s art-deco building at 546 Collins Street.

Deeply rooted in tradition and culture, il Mercato Centrale will emulate the dynamics of a traditional Italian market square, promising an evolving cultural hub, like its venues in Florence, Rome, Turin and Milan.

At the heart of il Mercato Centrale are 23 food and beverage artisans, chosen for their unique expertise and knowledge, and a deep passion for sharing their craft with people. From milling their own flour to producing cheese using a thousand-year-old European method, these are the artisans.

The heritage listed McPherson Building built in 1937 was chosen as the home of il Mercato Centrale Melbourne for its unique story and central location. Conceptually designed by renowned architect, Alberto Torsello, a strict methodology of integration with respect to traditional construction was central to all decisions, with exposed concrete and polished steel paying homage to its beginning as a hardware manufacturing factory.

The 3,500 square metre venue spans across three levels, creating Melbourne’s most concentrated artisanal food and beverage and cultural hub. With a total standing capacity of 3,000 people, each level offers seating.

The ground level will feature an immersive and experiential market square with open kitchens where customers can observe the skills and craftsmanship of the artisans, including a specialty cheesemaker, patisserie, bakery, butcher and handmade pasta bar. The first level will be home to casual and fine dining options, with the second level reserved for private events, artisan masterclasses and free community cultural events.

il Mercato Centrale general manager, Gary Patikkis said, “We are beyond delighted by how the space is coming to life and are excited to share the authentic essence of il Mercato Centrale with Australia this September. Our venue will not only bring a cultural experience never-before seen in Melbourne, but it will also celebrate the rich tradition of Italian cuisine and hospitality through our dedicated food and beverage artisans.

“Ingrained in Melbourne’s cultural fibres is a passion for quality food and a boldness to try something new, which, combined with the significance of the McPherson building made Melbourne the obvious home for the first il Mercato Centrale outside of Italy. We look forward to unveiling il Mercato Centrale and becoming a cherished cornerstone of Melbourne’s vibrant food and hospitality scene.”
