The decision to phase out 3G services by Telstra and Optus is a significant blow for many small businesses across Australia, according to Localsearch CEO, Adam Hargraves.

It’s not just about upgrading phones; it’s about the ripple effect on businesses that rely on 3G for key operations such as processing invoices, operating EFTPOS systems, and maintaining crucial communication lines.

“Many of these businesses are still using older devices, like the iPhone 5, which doesn’t support 4G, let alone 5G. The sudden shift puts these businesses in a tough position, forcing them to upgrade equipment that may have otherwise been fully functional,” Hargraves said.

“Telstra’s and Optus’ plans to run an awareness campaign aren’t enough. At Localsearch, we’re calling for more substantial action—whether that be government support in the form of compensation, or trade-in schemes for older devices, similar to what’s being explored overseas, like Vodafone’s partnership with Starlink in New Zealand.

“It’s vital to recognise that for many small businesses, a 3G connection is still the backbone of their operations. Yet, they often don’t have the loudest voice when it comes to advocating for support in these transitions.

“Without a clear plan, this decision could further strain businesses already grappling with rising wages, growth concerns, and inflation. Now, more than ever, we need solutions that consider the practical realities small businesses face day to day.”
