After launching a membership program and members-only sales event last month, eBay Australia has revealed its latest move in the battle for marketplace shoppers—a best price guarantee.

The guarantee features over 120 retailers, including Amazon, and covers shoppers for the difference between the price paid on eBay and the price of an identical product on an approved competitor’s site, plus 5 per cent of the competitor’s price.

If a shopper purchases a new, fixed price item for $100 on eBay but finds it on a competitor’s site for $90, eBay will issue a coupon for $14.50 (the $10 price difference plus 5 per cent of the competitor’s price, which in this case is $4.50).

EBay Australia and New Zealand chief marketing officer Julie Nestor said the best price guarantee is a case of eBay putting its money where its mouth is.

“We have the best products at the best prices, so Aussies don’t have to shop around, but if you do buy a new product on eBay and see it cheaper elsewhere, we’ve got you covered,” she said. “If Aussie shoppers do manage to find a cheaper price, we’re not just matching prices—we’re beating them.

“Australians shop first on eBay because we have 40,000 Aussie retailers as part of our huge selection of over one billion listings across eBay’s global marketplaces.”

EBay launched its membership program, eBay Plus, in June, offering free delivery and returns on select products. As with Amazon Prime, members also get access to exclusive deals and discounts.

It also debuted Plus Weekend, a Prime Day-style shopping event giving eBay Plus members up to 72 per cent off on products from brands including Dyson, Samsung and GoPro.

According to Roy Morgan, 9.4 million Australians visit eBay in an average four week period, ahead of local Australian second-hand shopping site Gumtree with 5.6 million visitors.

Amazon sits in third spot with 4.7 million visitors, twice as many as fourth placed Kogan.com with nearly 2.3 million visitors.

“Best Price Guarantee, coupled with free shipping and returns via our new eBay Plus membership program, are all about delivering the value and convenience Aussies love,” said Nestor.
