OneMusic launched with an offer to existing music licence clients if they got their licence application in ‘on time’ they would kick the tin for Rural Aid’s Gift of Music program.

To make this happen online quickly and easily the OneMusic website needed to be able to process the wide variety of retail background music – both goods retailers and service retailers.

Did that happen? 96 per cent of those signing up for a new licence online did so without needing to use Live Chat. Four out of five online clients signed up without making a single phone call to the dedicated 1300 number.

Around 3,600 retailers have signed up online so far. There are about 5,600 retailers in total who have been re-licensed under OneMusic (from the previous APRA AMCOS and PPCA licensing system).

To the really great blokes: David, Peter, Michael, John and Andrew – the five most common first names in OneMusic’s retail owner data base – thanks for being so efficient.

Let’s face it – we all need a nudge to get admin done and the results are good. So far, these three-thousand-odd retailers have made sure donations flow through to Rural Aid just by jumping online and relicensing sooner rather than later.

While some regions have experienced a drenching in February, there are millions of rural communities still in drought and relying on Rural Aid’s help, so the simple act of signing up for a music licence on time is an effortless way to help out.

Retailers may be due a credit

In November OneMusic cut rates for the retail sector. Accounting adjustments will be made for clients already signed up.

Half price rates came in. The $230 licence fee rate is now less than half the initial launch rate – $95 a year for the balance of this financial year.

For small-space retailers, 50 square metres or less of retail space starts at $85 a year to license (Bronze). To license 51-150 square metres of retail space under Bronze is now $90 a year (was $144) and rates for larger stores have similar rate cuts.

A licence under the Bronze category allows a retailer an unlimited number of devices to play music – from a terrestrial or digital broadcast through TV and/or a radio (not from a cable or from the internet).

An extra music-use category was slotted in: Silver Lite. Silver Lite rates start from $127.50 for a retail area of up to 50 square metres. These rates ‘max out’ at $1,062.50 for an outlet with 5,001+ square metres.

Silver Lite allows a retailer or service provider to have music playing in their business through a single device only. This could be from a commercial background music supplier, from a commercial recorded music format such as a DVD or a vinyl record or from an internet TV or internet radio.

What next?

If you haven’t heard from OneMusic yet, you will. Letters and emails are sent well ahead of when you old APRA AMCOS or PPCA licence falls due. New clients will be obviously licensed under these new lower rates.
