Australian designer, Alice McCall will headline the judging panel for the inaugural R.I.S.E. Student Designer Challenge being run exclusively in Australia by global online retail giant, SHEIN.
McCall joins the SHEIN panel who will assess finalists on their innovation, vision and aesthetic interpretation of the theme of ‘Retro-Futurism’.
Students who enter the competition are being offered an opportunity to have their designs manufactured and promoted via SHEIN’s global website, while retaining ownership of their ideas.
To accommodate student timetables, SHEIN has extended the entry deadline until August 2 2024. The competition is free to enter and requires students to upload a sketch of their original designs.
Each entry can include one or more items that form a complete look with entrants retaining ownership of their submitted designs. An explanation of the look and the story behind it must also be submitted.
The SHEIN R.I.S.E. Student Designer Challenge celebrates the characteristics of Resilience, Inspiration, Support and Empowerment. It offers Australian students the chance to win cash prizes and the title of SHEIN X Designer. This includes mentorship from industry leaders, global exposure, and the opportunity to see their designs produced and sold internationally while earning from their creations under a commission-based model.
“Fashion is often an amalgamation of ideas and design lines from the past, with modern techniques, technologies and trends of today. Retro-Futurism, the theme of the SHEIN R.I.S.E. Student Designer Challenge, opens a whole melting pot of the past, present and future and the opportunity to create wearable and covetable looks that feel relevant for today,” McCall said.
“SHEIN is committed to making the business of fashion accessible. The R.I.S.E. Student Designer Challenge serves as a platform for aspiring designers to showcase their looks in front of a global audience and gain valuable experience from industry leaders like Alice,” a SHEIN spokesperson said.
The competition is free to enter and open to any student over 18 years old currently enrolled in any course at an Australian tertiary institution.
