‘Nostalgic gifting’ is quickly becoming one of this season’s biggest trends, with nearly two-thirds (61%) of Australians saying they would consider buying a retro gift this Christmas, according to new eBay research.

Over half (54%) of Australians say they’re more likely to opt for nostalgic gifts because they’re often regarded as more affordable, especially if they’re pre-loved, while still being thoughtful. The research uncovered that thoughtfulness is at the top of Australians’ minds this year, with practical gifting (46%) and personalised gifting (40%) also popular.

The top Christmas gifts adults loved as a child and would still be excited to receive this year include toys and games such as LEGO, Hot Wheels and Twister (36%), doll figurines or collectables, including Barbie, Bratz and Troll dolls, Polly Pocket and Beanie Babies (34%), video games or consoles, including Nintendo 64, PlayStation 1 and 2 and Gameboy (33%), record players and vinyl records (22%) and Polaroid or digital cameras (20%).

eBay Australia’s Zannie Abbott said, “Since arriving in Australia 25 years ago, eBay has connected Australians with shared passions, from pre-loved fashion to vintage collectables and car parts. We’ve seen a clear shift toward retro items in recent years, with Gen Z leading the trend. Many of these items, like digital cameras, video games, and vinyl, evoke a simpler time before advanced technology.

“Retro gifts offer something unique and thoughtful for any age, whether they bring back nostalgic memories or reflect the latest trend. Our research also shows that, with cost-of-living pressures weighing heavily on Australians, more are turning to nostalgic gifts this Christmas to save money while still giving something meaningful and special.”
